“If you’re bottle-feeding with the excuse that you’re too busy and under the pretext that milk formulas have enough nutrients to produce the next Einstein anyway, think again.â€
These were the words of breastfeeding advocate Suzi Entrata, as she closed the first ever run dedicated to lactating mothers—the Barbizon Milkshake Marathon. She is one of the women who participated in the 2 kilometer fun run that traversed the length of The Fort at the Bonifacio Global City today, August 4, 2007. She is one of the remarkable women who are stopping at nothing just to proclaim that: breastfeeding is still best for babies.
Imagine there were 200 participants which included moms, dads and kids.
Suzi Entrata hailed the courage of women who made the choice to breastfeed. “[tag]Breastfeeding[/tag] in Philippine society where bottle-feeding is the norm, clearly requires a significant commitment, especially when relatives and friends do not support them.†She further added that infant feeding is more than just a lifestyle choice. “Breastfeeding is a significant health decision with life-long consequences for babies, parents as well as the environment.â€
The Barbizon Milkshake Marathon is the Philippines’s first run dedicated to modern lactating mothers. As a free fun run, it was expressive of the dynamic, frequently hilarious, yet undoubtedly noble aspects of breastfeeding that the woman of today experiences. This event had the main objective of shaking popular myths about breastfeeding, most especially the notion that it is only for old-fashioned, stay-at-home moms who have nothing else better to do.
Dale Rutstein Chief of the Communication Section , United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) discussed the benefits of breastfeeding. “Breast Feed for at least 6 months”. One can save 16,000 Filipino Children a year if mothers breastfeeds on their babies.
World Health Organization (WHO) Medical Officer, Howard Sobel interviews his 9 year old son, Aaron . The boy told us that he was breastfed for 2 years and that for the first 6 months of his life, he was purely breastfed.
Talks by prominent celebrity lactivists, tips on breastfeeding in public and other entertaining yet enlightening activities were also featured in the event. In addition to this, Barbizon also showcased maternity intimates that were stylish and functional in equal measure. Barbizon’s nursing bras for example, are designed specifically accommodate fluctuating breast size while maintaining chic comfort and flexibility.
It takes a notable corporate sponsor to help out in breastfeeding advocacy since promotional costs are involved. I am glad that Barbizon is the major sponsor for this event. When I breastfed my babies decades ago, nursing bras were not so common. If ever, the bras were ill-fitting and never really supported my breasts.
Barbizon, the niche leader in reasonably priced yet high quality and fashionable intimate apparel has long mastered the art of undergarment support for women; yet through the breastfeeding initiative, Barbizon Milkshake Marathon, it took its ‘support’ for the Filipino woman to a whole new level. Breastfeeding advocate groups Philippine Association for Childbirth Education, Mommy Matters and Best Friends in Breastfeeding also worked hand in hand with Barbizon in this endeavor.
