Shopping in Orchard Road’s New Malls

Singapore’s Orchard Road has several new shopping centers that tourists and locals will surely enjoy. Perhaps the most eye-catching one is the Ion Orchard Mall; after all, it’s hard not to notice a mall that stands 12 meters tall and features such exquisite architecture. This retail mall is said to be the largest public sheltered square with its 117-meter frontage and panoramic observation deck. Strategically located above the Orchard Road Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station, the Ion Orchard Mall has over eight retail levels, four on the basement and four above ground.

Foreign brands like Sephora are already open in Ion, but six yet-to-be-announced luxury super brands will be opening their flagship stores in the future. Ion Orchard Mall won’t just be catering to the high-end market though; there are many mid- and upper mid- stores for the discerning shopper to enjoy.

There’s also the refurbished Mandarin Gallery, an intimate-sized mall that has over 100 retail stores, many of them leading fashion labels and local designers.

The mall’s carefully-selected international brand names include Marc by Marc Jacobs, Just Cavalli, a.i. by Ashley Isham, and Mauboussin, to name a few.

313@Somerset is a mid-market retail mall with 8 levels of shopping and dining. Key brands include the 4-level Forever 21 flagship store, a 3-level Zara store, the largest Uniqlo store outside Japan, and the New Look flagship store. This is the mall to go to if you’re looking for trendy casual apparel.

Last but not the least is Orchard Central, Singapore’s tallest vertical mall. Its soft opening was on July 2, 2009 and stands a proud 12 storeys tall. I normally don’t like going to big malls because getting from point A to point B takes too long, but Orchard Central is divided into clusters with distinct personalities so you don’t have to wander too far:
1. EXCLUSIVE cluster (Levels 2 to 4)
2. FLAGSHIP cluster (Basement 2 to level 3)
3. YOUTH cluster (Levels 5 and 6)
4. HIGH LIFE cluster (Levels 7 and 8)
5. MAIN cluster (Levels 1 to 4)
6. DISCOVERY Walk (Level 1)
7. MASSTIGE cluster (Basements 1 and 2)
8. FOOD HAVEN (Rooftop)
Orchard Central is also very easy to get to; it has links to the Somerset MRT station and the Discovery Walk.
Along Orchard Road, you will notice the changes on the architecture. Old buildings are being refurbished.

Orchard road will continue to be a the fun hangout for most tourists with all these new attractions.
