Just because it’s imported, it does not necessarily mean that it’s made out of superior stuff. Locally made products are just as good, if not better, and the only reason why a lot of us don’t know this is because our market is saturated with imported goods and because the high quality goods we produce are consumed outside of the country.

All of this is about to change, and the Buy Pinoy Movement Foundation is one of the few spearheading this change. The Buy Pinoy Movement Foundation Inc is holding the 16th Buy Pinoy Exporters’ Fair on November 27 -30, 2008 at SM Megatrade Hall 2, 5th level, Mega B, SM Megamall. Featuring export-quality Christmas decorations, clothes, accessories, organic products, furniture, and household items, the Buy Pinoy Fair offers all sorts of world-class products for Filipino buyers.

Besides making Filipino-produced goods more available to local consumers, the Buy Pinoy Fair also aims to raise consumer consciousness on the global competitiveness of Filipino products, promote Filipino products here and abroad through fora and trade fairs, encourage local talent and investors by showing them the advantages of producing products locally, and promote sustainable development.

by Noemi Lardizabal-Dado

One of the most interesting and exciting birthday presents I got was from my dad during my 23rd birthday, in 1981. Tearing open the gift wrapper revealed a box with an unfamiliar name on it: Sony Walkman. My dad explained to me that this was the latest in technology from Japan, and that it can play cassette tapes. I was really surprised to see that cassette tape players came in such compact form now, and since I had a fairly large collection of dance music tapes, I was thrilled with my new present.

I wish I could remember name of the model of my first Sony Walkman, but I can still remember what it looked like. It was a silver, boxy gadget with the standard buttons you need to navigate through a cassette tape - play, stop, fast forward, and rewind. Unlike the Walkmans my kids used in the 90’s, mine didn’t have an AM/FM receiver or a record option. It was simply that: a portable device that let me listen to my cassette tapes wherever I went.

Technology might have been simple back then, without all the extra features everyone is used to today, but you have to remember that the Walkman was quite the novelty at the time. I brought mine with me wherever I went, and I would use it to listen to songs that reminded me of the happiest and most meaningful moments of my life. One of those songs was “How Deep is Your Love” by the Beegees, which my boyfriend and I (now my husband) decided was our theme song. The Walkman, however, was it was most useful to me when I would go jogging after work. I remember the sensation of the bass thudding through the padded earphones. It made me feel as if I were living in a world that was entirely my own, a world where anything was possible. Again, I would have my trusty Beegees cassette playing, usually to the songs “Staying Alive” and “Saturday Night Fever”.

My Walkman became my number one companion when my boyfriend and I broke up for several months. The break-up devastated me; during the first week I played nothing but sad songs from The Carpenters, especially “End of the World.” I was grateful that the Walkman came with earphones; at the time I was sharing a room in a boarding house and I didn’t want to disturb my roommates with my depressing choice of music. After a while I grew tired of moping, so I resumed my afternoon jogging ritual. I’d put on the most upbeat songs I had on my Walkman and it helped me tune out my sadness and set the pace for how fast I would jog.

In an age where everyone owns an mp3 player, my story doesn’t sound very unusual; I’m sure that a lot of people feel similar when they tune out the world to their own music today. But it’s amazing how nobody ever gives much thought to its ancestor, the great grandfather of all portable music players. Sometimes I wonder if kids these days even got to experience what it was like to carry around a chunkier version of their iPods and a clunky, noisy set of tapes to go along with it. Even if it was not as compact as today’s music players, the Sony Walkman definitely gave significance in my life just like the Sony’s World’s First Noise Canceling Portable Music Player, which gives me tranquility and joy as I relax with my music.

Mineral makeup is more than just a trend in beauty culture. Unlike traditional makeup products, mineral makeup is a hypoallergenic loose powder that contains no talc, alcohol, dyes, perfumes, oil, or preservatives. Mineral makeup nourishes the skin while providing sheer to full coverage - minus the thick, pore-clogging consequences of traditional makeup.

Here are some more reasons why mineral makeup is good for you:

Mineral makeup is great on sensitive skin. Commercial makeup tends to cause acne, clogged pores, and allergies. But because mineral makeup is 100% organic and oil-free, it will not clog pores nor cause pimples like traditional cosmetics.

It feels like you’re not wearing any makeup at all. A lot of women don’t like using makeup because it feels like they have layers of powder on, but the texture of mineral makeup is light and different. Even if you put on enough for full coverage, your makeup will still look natural and radiant.

Mineral makeup protects skin from the sun. One of the ingredients found in mineral makeup is zinc oxide, which offers natural protection from UV-rays. Most mineral makeup products have 6-10% zinc, and some of them offer 20 or 30 SPF.

Going to the mall is pretty much the only form of recreation around here, so it’s always a big event when a theme park comes to visit. They provide exciting experiences that stimulate our imaginations and tickle our senses, but the best kind of theme park is the one that can take you back in time in order to teach you something about the history of man and the world we live in.

This afternoon, media got a sneak preview on the upcoming Dinosaurs Alive World Tour as it is completing its construction for the holiday season.

Oh yes, the Dinosaurs Alive World Tour is coming to Manila after a successful tour in Bangkok, Thailand and Jakarta, Indonesia. Dinosaurs Alive is an interactive walk-through exhibition with a dramatic display of life-size dinosaurs, simulator rides, merchandise, and other fun activities for children and the rest of the family. The fully air-conditioned theme park is 12,000 square meters wide and houses over 31 interactive robotic dinosaurs from the Cretaceous and Jurassic, the largest one towering up to two storeys high.

At the Dinosaurs Alive World Tour, you’ll find classic favorites like the Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus, and Megalosaurus.

All of them have been brought to life using high quality latex that resembles the kind of skin scientists say dinosaurs might have had back when they still roamed the earth.

There are other spectacles for you to see at the Dinosaurs Alive World Tour - magicians, jugglers, fire eaters, clowns, puppet shows, face painters, balloon sculptors and huamn statues. There are hourly stage shows at the food court and a reptile show, featuring a seven-foot crocodile, an albino python, iguanas, and komodo dragons who will join their dinosaur ancestors.

The Purefoods Dino Train will also take kids to explore the Caltex Fossil Dig Adventure and feel what it’s like to be an archaeologist unearthing exciting finds.

Here are some fun facts about the making of the Dinosaurs Alive World Tour:

- 3000 kva of power is required to stage the show (enough to run a small town).
- 450 people helped create the venue.
- Over 125 people are required to manage the show on a daily basis.
- 30 tons of concrete was used to make the venue.
- 250m of drainage pipes were installed.
- A 10m waterfall stands at the entrance of the show (the tallest in Manila).
- The total weight of all the Dinosaurs on-site comes to 45 tonnes.
- The total distance the Dinos Alive Tour has traveled is over 10,000km.
- To date a quarter million people have seen the DAT World Tour.

The Right Offer

It was a year ago that I learned about Bratpack because of a blogger event that introduced us to the Timbuktu laptop bag. A few days later, I bought myself a Timbuktu ladies laptop bag called Marina from where else…BRATPACK. It amazes me to see the growth of Bratpack after I received an invite to attend the launch of their Greenbelt 5 branch. Back in July 2007, they only had two branches.

Bratpack also added many other brands to their roster, making it easy for their customers to choose a bag that suits their personalities and lifestyles. Each brand carries their own distinct style. JanSport’s iconic SuperBreak backpack is practically an icon and has been popular among students, travelers, and adventure-seekers for over 40 years now. Then we have Timbuk2, of course, whose tough messenger bags makes the brand a favorite among urbanites and young people all over the world. There’s also a Belgian brand called Hedgren, whose bags are inspired by the perfect symmetry of the cube and features clean lines and elegant accents.

Besides bags, Bratpack also carries Skull Candy headphones, skate brands DC and Sector9, and Sanuk for surfers. There’s definitely something in there for all sorts of lifestyles.

Most blogger events are scheduled at night and I am often hesitant to attend because it means less quality time with my husband and children. But yesterday night was an exception.

Like all blogger events, I enjoy the bonding moments with fellow bloggers. It’s been ages since I met up with Jane and I am really glad I went.

A lot of activities awaited the bloggers. First of all, we had the “design your own” clothes which was quite easy to do.

This was mine.

Second, was design your own Jansport bag.

And my least favorite activity was the riddle game because it took so long to finish and alienated a lot of the bloggers that didn’t participate. The game was really cute and innovative mind you, but I won’t bore you with the details of this contest. I am happy though that Jane won a bag after being persistent with the game unlike bored old me.

It was still a happy event despite that game…and I will make you even happier by giving you a chance to win this Bratpack bag until November 14.

You might still have the chance to win a bratpack bag. Win a Bratpack bag. Deadline is November 14, 2008.
