Shopping at the Clinique Counter: The Clinique 3-Step Solution

It’s not the most affordable skincare and makeup line in the market, but I’ve been a loyal customer of Clinique since high school. I used to get very bad acne breakouts, which was partially caused by the cheap cosmetics I used. My mom’s sister, who is a dermatologist, recommended that I ditch the Johnson and Johnson’s face powders and use Clinique’s non-commodegenic, 100% fragrance-free pressed powders instead. It was only around last year that I stopped getting horrible break-outs, but using Clinque’s make-up helped improve my skin significantly.

If I had known back then that Clinique had a whole three-step skin care system for acne-prone skin, maybe I would have prevented the break-outs earlier. Yesterday, I went with my mom and my college friend Nikki to the Clinique counter at Rustan’s Makati for a free personal skin care consultation. Clinique’s philosophy is that great skin can be created through a daily skin care regimen that lasts no longer than ten minutes a day.

The first thing the consultants did was to help us determine our skin type. Clinique’s skin care lines have products designed to make significant improvements on specific skin types – dry, very dry, oily, very oily, or a combination of both. After answering several questions, I discovered that my skin was type 3 – oily combination skin. It means that my face gets oily on the T-zone, but not so much on the cheek area.

The consultant then showed me how I can prevent acne, whiteheads, and blackheads using a three-step skin care regimen I need to do twice a day. The first step is to wash my face with the Clinique facial soap made for oily skin. It thoroughly cleans your face without drying the skin – something that a lot of facial soaps fail to do. Most soaps do clean the skin, but they leave it horribly dry.

The next step is to exfoliate with Clarifying Lotion 3. This is apparently what makes great skin different from good skin. The Clarifying Lotion unclogs pores, controls oils, makes your skin look brighter and healthier, and prepares your skin to receive and retain more moisture.

The last and final step is to moisturize with Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. Although I’ve never bought my own bottle of Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel, I’ve been using this one for several years thanks to the free samples that come with my Clinique pressed powder. This is hands down my favorite moisturizer because it’s such a light and unobtrusive product – it makes my skin feel soft and supple minus the sticky, heavy feeling of lotion.

At the end of our consultation, we were all given small samples of our respective Clinique 3-Step Skin Care Solutions that will last around a week. But because my mom is such a huge sucker for bargains and freebies, she ended up buying 3,500 worth of Clinique products so she could get a free Clinique Bonus Pack, a colorful cosmetic bags with several Clinique goodies including repairwear intensive eye cream, rinse-off foaming cleanser, clarifying moisture lotion 2, and makeup.

Last night, I finally tried on the three products on my skin. Maybe it’s just the power of suggestion, but I could immediately feel a difference after I used the Clinique facial wash – my skin has never felt so soft and good to touch! The only downside is that my Skin Care Solution set costs around P4,000 – way, way more than what I’m willing to pay for for facial soap, a toner, and moisturizer. I may end up buying the facial wash once I run out, but as for the other two – I think I can survive on free samples.

Hi there! I’ve been using VMV Hypoallergenics for years and
I’ve been thinking of giving Clinique a try, but am afraid
to do so. If I go to their counter and have my skin analyzed,
will I get a free sample first so I can see the difference?
