    The Philippines a beautiful tropical paradise, and it’s about time the rest of the world realize this! Yesterday, the Department of Tourism together with MTV Asia launched Awesome Philippines, a unique tourism campaign for our country. Using new media and a series of video vignettes, Awesome Philippines aims to promote the Philippines to young travelers and adventure-seekers in eleven countries, including the United States, the UK, New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia.

    Each video vignette features MTV VJs from various countries showing beautiful destinations and attractions you can only find in the Philippines. Among the VJs is VJ Taya, who posted video vignettes of her Philippine vacation on YouTube together with Christine Gambito, also known as YouTube’s HappySlip. Both hope that through this project, more and more people will be excited about flying over and exploring the Philippine islands.

    But what makes Awesome Philippines the first of its kind is its unique use of new media to promote Philippine tourism. On the Awesome Philippines’ official website, you can join an online contest called Video Remixes, where you create your dream holiday in a Philippines via a video story. Just pick out edit cuts of different clips and photos of Philippine destinations, slap on the appropriate music, then register online and show off your dream Philippine holiday video to the world! If your video receives high ratings from other users, you have a chance to win your dream holiday with a friend! The contest is currently ongoing and will last until May 24, 2009.

    Besides the Video Remixes contest, Awesome Philippines has another exciting web-based activity for users of the virtual world Second Life. Second Life is an interactive virtual world that allows you to create a virtual avatar, interact with other players, and join them in tasks and activities. One of these activities include the chance to explore a virtual Philippines!

    The Philippines on Second Life has yet to have its official launch, but you can watch this YouTube video to get an idea of what the virtual Philippines looks like.

    Did you know that our President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has an avatar at SecondLife.com? It’d be interesting to see her frolicking around the sands of Virtual Boracay or the beaches in Bohol Island. How exciting!
