Palanca Award
Today, I had a conversation with someone I worked with on The Guidon and she told me that she was planning on submitting one of her short stories to the Palanca Award next year. She’s the second person I know who asked me if I had any plans on joining the Palancas. “Maybe,” I said. “I really don’t know.”
Actually, I’m more leaning towards a no answer because I’m really not one to compete, and certainly not on something like this. The one and only competition I’ve ever been in was this extemporaneous speech thing back in high school. It was a disaster. I never expected to win, but I was crushed and terribly depressed when I lost anyway. My writing is one of the things I’m very very sensitive about, and if I thought that my work was good enough to be in the Palancas and I don’t win…so does that mean that I’m crap at writing? I don’t think I’m a bad writer, really. But every now and then I get these horrible bouts of insecurity, especially when I read the work of a contemporary and I like it. And I’m not sure what my point is, really, except that it’s highly unlikely that I will be joining the Palancas until I feel confident enough about my work.

Oh gosh, I know how that feels! I always feel uncomfortable sharing my creative writing. I haven’t shared any of the stuff I’ve written over the past 4 or 5 years.
But just because something you’ve written doesn’t win a prize, it doesn’t mean you’re a bad writer. It just means there weren’t enough prizes to go around! In my opinion, any writing that is good enough to be in a contest in the first place is good writing! Otherwise, it wouldn’t be in the contest!
