Geeks rock

I just found another lovely place at school where I can kill time or seek refuge from the rest of the world. That place is the library.

When I was in fourth grade, I won this award from my school for being the student who borrowed the most number of books for the year. Everyday at lunch time, I would go to the library and spend the rest of the period sitting quietly, devouring one book after another. I know it sounds so antisocial, but I don’t think I went there because I wanted to avoid people. I guess I simply loved reading and being surrounded by so many books. I still do.

Which is why I felt like a fourth grader again when I saw the second and third floor of the school library. I’ve been to the library a few times during the last semester, but for some reason I had this impression that students can only stay in the first floor. I wanted to get a copy of Mrs. Dalloway but I was told that reference books are the only books in the first floor. So I ventured upstairs and was taken aback when I saw the rows and rows of books. Whoa. I guess I got used to the small library of my crummy high school–I never thought so many books could exist in one place. My jaw dropped open and I happily walked in between bookshelves the way a country girl would walk in between rows of corn. I held out an arm as I walked and my fingernails scraped at the hard covers of the books. I was truly in my element. It took me a while but I managed to find Mrs. Dalloway somewhere in the third floor. I wanted to spend more time checking out the other books but my blockmates were waiting for me. I made a mental note to go there sometime soon.

I sound like such a geek, getting all excited and happy about a library. But then Ponci told me, “You have to be a geek if you want to stay in Ateneo.” Fair enough. Hopefully my love for reading will lessen my chances of being a college dropout.

oooo…that’s such a good book. Once you’re done it you should really read ‘The Hours’ by Micheal Cunningham. It’s the book the movie ‘The Hours’ was based on, and it’s kind of a different version of Mrs. Dalloway - great stuff.

I love going in at lunch, sitting peacefully reading in the library. :D It’s truly fun for me to find great new books and read them.

Reminds me of when I went to the Mesa Public Library and Phoenix and was astounded by how many books there were! It was three stories high and was filled with everything imaginable: a huge room just for magazines, rows and rows of computers, another huge room just for newspapers– it was so different compared to my crummy town public library.
