Oh, how I want to slap the Cheeky-freaky Girls

June 30th, 2003 with 239 views
For some reason, my roommates stayed at their respective homes last night and I ended up sleeping all by myself in the suddenly all-too big and dark room. I kept imagining all sorts of nasty ways I could die in an empty dorm room, from a killer flipis (flying roach) bite to a slasher-movie killer climbing up the balcony and carving me inside out. At the same time, I was also thoroughly enjoying myself. For two weeks now the sound card in the computers at home and in the dorm haven’t been working, and I have been suffering from serious music withdrawal syndrome. While I was talking to Jason, it occured to me that maybe I could turn the radio on to this station that I like! I jumped up and turned the dial to that station and I swear to God, it was like listening to my mp3s back at home. I have never felt so giddy and cheerful in days. :)

I insisted that Jason talk to me until I fall asleep, and the next thing I knew, the line was dead and it was 5-something in the morning. I could hear my roommate and her mom coming in. I fell asleep again but a couple of minutes later, I woke up to the sound of static. I opened my eyes blearily, and saw a tiny, car-sized TV on the other side of the bedroom by my roommate’s bed.

I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry. In addition to that r&b pop crap my roommates like to listen to, I will now have to endure the sound of noontime shows and Filipino/Spanish/Chinese soap operas.

But while I was eating my second breakfast, I heard a familliar tune that brought back memories from my childhood days…

“Cedieeeeeee!” I shrieked. Bringing along my food, I ran to where the TV was. Cedie is this anime-ish cartoon I used to watch back in first grade, the story of which is based on the book Little Lord Fauntleroy. I remember watching it everyday before I left for school. The reception on the TV is really crappy, but what the hell. I was very much entertained for the next half hour. If there’s gonna be a TV without cable in the dorm, I might as well benefit from it.

I never thought I’d say this, but thank God for Meteor Garden. It was either that or the radio, and of course my roomies would rather watch Meteor than listen to the radio. My advice: do not, under any circumstances, room with someone whose favorite song is the Cheeky Girls. Not unless you’re prepared to suffer from some serious mental torture.

Oh, and I have the option to transfer to Math 11. :D It means I only got half the questions right but what the hell, that’s a lot better than failing the diagnostic test. I’m definitely moving up. I want to have a summer vacation! Plus, I think that My First Secret Crush is in Math 11 too. ;)

if you’re thankful for meteor garden, you must be in a really, really bad way.

    be strong.

I gotta admit that the F4 guys are quite cute. But I hate how they’re literally everywhere in the Philippines, from shoulder bags to stickers! 8-O

i’m not only tortured because my best friend, who has crossed the line into utter kabaduyan, watches it and knows the words to the song but because the people at the gym watch it too!!! How am i supposed to get in the mood to exercise with THAT in the background?

  5. Josh on June 30, 2003 09:58 pm

What’s the fuss about Meteor Garden? What kind of soap is that? Is it science fiction based or drama? ;-)

  6. Janice on June 30, 2003 10:18 pm

It’s based on pretty boys who think they can sing

  7. kwix on July 1, 2003 03:53 am

eww, the cheeky girls!!! which one have you heard? anyway, it doesnt matter i cant stand any of their songs either. you think the cheeky girls are annoying? well, try listening to “the fast food rockers” and their first single, “the fast food song.” i’m from england, that’s why i know. we get a lot of crapness around here…nice website by the way, very interesting

Uh…not really. It was primarily a rendition of a manga story. It was on that story that gave the producer the drive to look for anime-lookalikes (not really) and have them act on a real drama series based on the manga.

Yeah…the meteor garden f4 thingie is just too much. But I don’t think it’s baduy. That’s how we often associate kabaduyan with–kung pangmasa…baduy na. I think it’s a good thing that people are finally opening up the cultural barriers and getting to know their fellow neighboring asians’ cultures. Even though Meteor Garden is pop, it does portray the “oriental” culture in a way. At least all those American series/shows are now balanced with these.

Kaya nga di tayo umuunlad kasi minsan puro “kabaduyan” ang tingin natin sa kulturang asyano.

i have yet to see the show meteor garden or hear one of their songs, but man, believe me, i know what they look like! they *are* everywhere. those bags and those buttons and stickers! and the pictures and posters. when people go crazy for something here, they go CRAZY.

they remind me of s club 7 in a way, how they’re a pop act with a tv show.

I don’t think that F4 is baduy because it’s Asian. It’s probably the dubbing that turns me off, and the fact that it’s just everywhere.

  12. Lauren on July 1, 2003 06:50 pm

The song that goes, “We are the cheeky girls, you are the cheeky boys…”

    :-x

It’s evil, I tell you! Evil!!!! Bubblegum pop should not exist!!!!

  13. Lauren on July 1, 2003 06:54 pm

The show is too weepy-weepy and unrealistic for me. I dunno, I’ve never been one for soap operas.

  14. Janice on July 1, 2003 09:05 pm

Yeah but they’re still PRETTY BOYS..

  15. sasha on July 2, 2003 02:10 am

it’s definately not the asian aspect that turns me off since i adore all things asian and i have a major respect and love for the different asian cultures.

The thing that makes it baduy for me is the dubbing in filipino and the fact that it’s a SOAP OPERA. Soap operas in general, whether they are american, australian, chinese, japanese, filipino, russian, or french, are BADUY.

I actually watched the whole Meteor Garden (1). I didn’t manage to even sit through the few minutes of the whole Cheeky song. I just got to that line and couldn’t take it anymore before I go mental.

Explains just how high my tolerence level is.

    TESTIFY!!!!

  18. Paula on July 2, 2003 01:34 pm

See you in Math11! Hope you signed up for SecEE. :P I remember watching Cedie too when I was in…Hmmm, 2nd grade? :P It was lovely back then….

  19. Opalessens on July 2, 2003 05:44 pm

the fact that it is mainstream turns you off…why? I don’t see how mainstream could be bad. If you logically know what you’re getting into and what is the point of the entity.

Kung baga…elitista kasi ang iba sa atin. Malungkot. Kaya nga hindi nagkakaintindihan ang mga mahihirap at mayayaman dito at sa mundo…kesyo pulitika o simpleng buhay man lang.

Soap operas …well to each his or her own. I generally think that Friends or Buffy or Charmed is yuck. Even though it isn’t soap.

  20. Lauren on July 2, 2003 06:00 pm

Maybe this will make me come off as an elitist but whatever… Quite honestly, the dubbing of Meteor Garden or any other show is very annoying. All the voices go up and down and the same way, and the dub of the leading girl or whoever she is is hurting my eardrums. =P Oh well. Even if Meteor Garden isn’t all the rage I still wouldn’t watch it. I’m not one for soap operas or unrealistic TV shows like Smallville and Buffy.

  21. Lauren on July 2, 2003 06:02 pm

You know what, there were only two slots for EE! =P I’m in section X, and I have this horrible feeling that I’m gonna be with all the brainy management students. =P I told my blockmate to sign up for that section so at least I’ll know someone there, but I dunno if he did…come what may na lang! Maybe I’ll make new friends or something.

  22. Opalessens on July 2, 2003 11:51 pm

you do have a point there. :) The dubbing isn’t good. I’m not defending meteor garden though and saying that it is a good show.

I guess I’m just sick of some people looking down at “pang-masa” appeal as “jologs” and senseless in an instant.

You’re comm right? Good research why people are so hooked unto meteor garden.

By the way, good luck this semester.

  23. Bruce on July 4, 2003 02:49 am

What’s the meaning of Meteor Garden anyway? Is it a meteor from space in the garden? Pls. enlighten me…

  24. Lauren on July 4, 2003 08:30 pm

Well I’m in Social Sciences. Maybe I can do my term paper on why people like watching soap operas or something. :)

  25. Lauren on July 4, 2003 08:31 pm

Who knows why it’s called Meteor Garden? O_o
