Woke up to a world that I am not a part of

January 31st, 2003 with 220 views

Thank God for Club Activity Days. Because of that, we missed our last two subjects and a Physics and P.E. long test. Yeah. :) It was such a big relief because I didn’t study enough for them last night. All I did was just stare at my notes, hoping that I would remember at least some of them, and then put off memorizing them for as long as I could. I swear, I must have the worst study habits in the world. I can’t believe that in spite of the fact that I can be such a bum, I made it to three of the universities I applied to. Patsy thinks it’s cool how me, her and Kriya never really stress over quizzes and homework, but manage to get above average grades. I thought about what she said, and in spite of the fact that I’m not exactly the most popular girl in school, at least I was able to somewhat enjoy my high school days. I don’t get how people like my sister can just stay home and study, study, study, and then cry if she gets an almost-failing grade in some minor quiz or something. Failing sucks, I know, but there’s really nothing you can do about it anymore. Your class rank might slip one notch or two, but it’s not going to kill you or earn you rejection letters or what. I think honor students need to lighten up a little. Or maybe studying is their passion, and locking themselves in their rooms to study the properties of protozoans is their idea of fun. Whatever.

I swear–if people find me snobby, they oughtta hang out with Patsy and Kriya. Now they are the real elitists. We were talking about college awhile ago and I said that I wanted to pass U.P. just so I could say I made it to all the universities I applied to. And then Patsy was like, “Hay naku, I hope I fail my U.P. You will never, ever catch me studying there. I really, really don’t think I can handle the crowd!” (But she hangs out with Bosconians. Even I find it difficult to get along with them.)

Kriya rolled here eyes. “Yeah, me too. Talk about a waste of time. I swear, I don’t think I can survive among all those jologs. If I end up going to U.P. I’d rather stay a loner than mingle with them.”

Both of them want to go to UAP because of the A-class crowd and the awesome location and the fact that you get your masters degree after five years. They even kind of said that the crowd in Ateneo is deteriorating (Oh save me, more jologs!), and that UAP is the place to be because even Ateneans–and quite a lot of them, too–are transferring there.

Whatever.

If there’s one thing I really can’t stand about the Philippines (or rather, Filipino society/culture/whatever), it’s how people judge you by the school you go to. It’s so freaking stupid! So what if you go to a school with an A-class crowd? That doesn’t guarantee you success in life. I know I can be really snobby sometimes. But never like that. The more I think of our conversation earlier this afternoon, the more I hope I get accepted to Sarah Lawrence. No more of this class discrimmination bullshit in New York. And so what if I might be the only Asian in there? I’ll be able to handle racial slurs. Anyone who makes a racial joke around me gets a kick in the nuts. Or a slap in the face. But seriously–racial jokes will probably be easier to handle than all this jologs this, jologs that crap.

How I wish I could get away from it all.

… all i can say is that i have more respect for people who go to Ateneo than to those who attend Uap..

Sarah Lawrence is actually a very politically correct college. You won’t have to worry about racial slurs.

Ouch. Coming from UP… that ought to hurt a bit. But the again, people can really be narrow-minded and absolutely superficial. God, that makes me cringe. Though I am not proud of UP’s jologs reputation… I’ve learned to mingle with them. Jeez… the jologs population is relatively small and the conyo population is getting bigger there. It’s probably the A-class crowd invasion. And I do agree with Shine’s comment. I have more respect for Ateneans than UA&P people. Having airconditioned rooms doesn’t make a school any better than others. ;)

i really really want to go to UP for college and so far about 80 percent of the people I’ve told that said they wouldn’t go with me to UP because of that same reason — that they can’t handle the crowd. it’s ridiculous.

It’s really sad how your two friends think they have the right to make such comments about things they really don’t know anything about– they have no idea what the crowd in U.P is really like, AND they’ll never find out either, because I’m pretty sure they don’t have what it takes to pass the UPCAT. Sorry… I also know a lot of people who got into UAP and chose to go to U.P. Oh yeah- Another thing about studying at U.P- since you’re exposed to so many different types of people, you learn that everyone is worth respect. Your friends need to learn that, and what it’s like to live in the real world because this is where they exist, whether they like it or not.

The people in UP are actually okay. Frankly, I still am not very comfortable with many of them, but those I made friends with are very accommodating, and I need that thoughtfulness because I don’t get to hang with the block all that much so I don’t exactly get updates as quick as they do.

My advice is for you to choose your friends wherever you’re going so you won’t end up getting screwed with your scholastic-slash-academic life, etc. I guess I’m lucky because no one’s boring even if all of us like school. The only thing acceptable as leisure that they do is going to the movies. Most of the time, they’re worrying over analytic geom and chemistry. That doesn’t mean, however, that I like everyone in the block. Some I consider great, others annonying, and the rest pretty much okay. Oh, there’s this one person (subhuman?? no, more like subhumanoid) I really detest. Watch out for social climbing, pseudo-english-speaking, rotten chameleons.

Oh I forgot to mention that people aren’t deducible to the school they attend. But if you do get into Sarah Lawrence, hmm.. maybe it’s more impressive if people know you’re educated abroad (but I’m not saying that the schools here aren’t good, too). Hey, Filipino culture with regards to this school-education-where-you-go-to issue is virtually unshakable.

class discrimination can be very irritating…specially since people use this as their measuring stick in choosing a university. but dnt you think labeling uap as a no-good school just for having a-class crowd is also a form of class discrimination? being rich doesnt mean ur dumb..d same goes with being jologs :)

  11. miscreant on February 5, 2003 01:56 pm

there’s actually more to uap than airconditioned rooms :p

i’m from la salle. as much as i love my school, i would still love to be in UP. UP is different. I have so much respect for people who pass the UPCAT. jologs or not, they have the brains.

as for UAP, most of the people i know who go there are there because they didn’t pass UP, ATENEO and DLSU …and the people i know in ateneo who transfer to UAP are those who just can’t handle it.

…and as for studying abroad, if you won’t be studying in an ivy leage school, you might as well stay in the philippines and go for the top 3 schools here. i really don’t understand why just the mere thought of studying abroad is such a big deal for filipinos. my friends make such a big deal about people who study abroad –but if you look into it, they just went to some dumb community college. colonial metality, ey.
