Filipino telenovelas
The Internet’s being unspeakably slow again, as usual. Nothing much happened at school today. Angelica parents brought her one year old brother Josh after school and he’s the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen! He has very white skin and light brown hair…everyone kept crowding around him and saying how cute he was. Josh kind of reminded me of Patsy’s kid cousin, Christina. She’s the most beautiful eight year old I’ve ever seen–she looks just like a porcelain doll. People just stop and stare at her whenever she walks past, but I don’t know if she’s humble about her looks or not. I hope to have really cute kids someday. Cute kids run in my family…I used to be a very cute kid. Whatever happened to me, I don’t know. So anyway, in order to have cute kids, naturally I must have a total Greek god for a husband. Where in the world I’m going to find that, I don’t know. Like I said, ideal guys are a rarity these days.
I know that it sounds so totally unlike me but I seem to have found myself slowly becoming addicted to the dark and dramatic world of……Filipino telenovelas. It all started last night. I was doing my nails in the dining table, which is adjacent to the den. While my nails were half done, Pangako Sa Yo (My Promise To You)–the most popular telenovela now–came on; the household help watches that regularly. And since my ears were open I heard everything that was going on. Until finally I was intrigued, and found myself moving to the den and watching along with them.
The story is actually very corny and complicated. From what I understand, the story is about a maid that gets involved in an affair with the son of the people she works for. Naturally, the guy’s parents don’t approve of their affair and so they fire her. Then the maid–who is actually quite pretty for a maid–gets discovered by a modelling agency and becomes a model. Once she has all that money and fame the guy goes back to her and all is well. But then she finds out that her boyfriend got another girl pregnant. She loves him too much to leave him which is too bad for her, and although the guy has no feelings for the girl he got pregnant, the latter loves him very much. The story is totally unrealistic and insipid, typical of Filipino telenovelas. And I hate to admit it but it leaves you wondering what will happen next. Such is the danger of watching telenovelas.
